Overview

The Carrock Halls of Residence offers 85 modern ensuite bedrooms. Available throughout the summer for both business or leisure, it has been awarded a 4 Star Visit Britain rating for the last sixteen consecutive years.

Arranged in 13 flats of between 5 and 9 bedrooms per flat, they have all the facilities you would expect from a self-catering provider including bedding, crockery, towels and internet.

History

Formed in 2007, the University of Cumbria is one of England´s newest universities but with a long history. It can be traced back through its legacy institutions: St. Martin’s College in Carlisle and Lancaster, Cumbria Institute of the Arts, Cumbria College of Art and Design, Charlotte Mason College in Ambleside.

The Skiddaw building on the Fusehill Street campus is a Grade II listed building which started life as the Union Workhouse in 1862.  During the First World War it was commandeered as a hospital for soldiers.  Prior to the university, the campus was home to the City General Hospital from 1948 and the Reception building housed the old maternity hospital, where many staff and locals were born.

Food & beverage

The flats are fully equipped with everything you will need to self-cater including electric cooker, microwave, fridge and freezer, pots and pans, crockery and cutlery.

The halls are just a five minute walk from the nearest supermarket and there is a convenience shop just across the road from the entrance.  If you don't want to cook there are plenty of restaurants, cafes and bars in the city centre to cover all kinds of tastes.

Grounds & Gardens

There are small garden and terrace at the entrance to the halls and picnic benches at the front of the campus.

With a bustling city centre, open surroundings and parks, Carlisle is a modern but spacious place to visit.  Carlisle's award-winning parks are ideal places to relax, get active with a game of football or tennis, or discover more about the fascinating history of the city.

Several parks are within easy walking distance of the campus, including Rickerby Park with its links to Hadrian's Wall, and Bitts Park with its children's play areas, Japanese gardens and ornamental lawns.

Steeped in history and located on Hadrian's Wall, Carlisle is packed full of things to do; with Carlisle Castle, the Cathedral and the award-winning Tullie House Museum.

There are plenty of opportunities for walking and cycling and the halls are ideally placed for the Coast to Coast and Hadrian's Wall cycle routes.

Other facilities

Wifi internet access is available in each bedroom and flat.

Each flat has a shared seating area next to the kitchen.

Card-operated laundry and drying facilities are located at the entrance to the halls - contact the Conference Office to collect a laundry card.

The campus has an air-conditioned gym and multi-purpose sports hall fully-equipped to accommodate many sports including:

five-a-side football, four badminton courts, full-sized and mini basketball courts, volleyball, tennis, trampolining, table tennis.

In addition, to card operated car parking there is also secure cycle parking on campus.
