Overview

Situated in the middle of Wallingford, this charming hotel is a beautiful market town with fine Georgian and Elizabethan houses. The George is a former coaching inn of the 16th century and boasts attractive bedrooms with all modern amenities, a first-class restaurant and a friendly bar. It's perfect for business or recreational traveller.

History

In 1517 Geoffrey and Elizabeth Baynton established The George and Dragon in the High Street so thereby becoming the first of many owners. The hotel itself has many stories to tell. Dick Turpin, the infamous highwayman is believed to have escaped the law on many occasions, from his room above the courtyard, jumping onto his ever-faithful Black Bess. The legend of the Teardrop room is a mixture of fact and circumstance. John Robson a royalist was fatally stabbed in a barroom brawl, leaving his betrothed heartbroken. She fled to her room and sobbed uncontrollably, mixing her tears with soot from the fire, which she then painted on the walls. In that same room 300 years later the teardrop symbols still remain.

Food & beverage

Full English breakfast is served, together with cereals, fruit juice and fruit, Monday - Friday 7.00am - 9:30 and weekends 8.00am - 9:30 am. The elegant Welsh's Restaurant offers a seasonal a la carte menu with many traditional English dishes whilst the more relaxed surroundings of the Bistro provide morning coffees, light lunches, afternoon teas and dinner in the evenings. An extensive list of wines and Champagnes are available from the property's cellars to accompany your meal. The ancient beams, log fire and friendly banter lends a warm and welcoming air to the Tavern Bar, the property's ever-popular ''local'' where real ales and good beers accompany a range of traditional hot and cold Pub Meals served all day. The Courtyard dominates the centre of the building and provides a perfect sun trap for outdoor socialising, eating and drinking.
