History

On 16 October 1869, the ‘College for Women’ opened at Benslow House in Hitchin, 30 miles south of Cambridge. This was a small-scale start in a rented property but the new College was born of an audacious vision.

As student numbers grew, and the Hitchin lease drew to an end, it was decided to move nearer to Cambridge for ease of integration into the life and work of the University. Various options were debated and in 1872 a site close to Girton village was secured. Here there was room for buildings and gardens and the potential for later growth.

In October 1873, the College, and its then 13 students, moved from Hitchin to Girton into a building designed by Alfred Waterhouse (and later augmented by both his son and his grandson). The new building could accommodate up to 21 students and three resident staff. Its three floors also included a dining hall (now Old Hall) and kitchens, reading room, reception room, three lecture rooms, a prayer room, entrance hall, and servants’ quarters. From the very beginning, Girton opened a door to the residential educational experience that is the hallmark of collegiate Cambridge.

Girton was the UK’s first residential institution offering university-level education for women. Girton’s foundation was a bold step towards women’s full and equal participation in political, social and economic life. Girton became a mixed college in 1979.

Today, Girton College is a permanent institution within the world-class University of Cambridge, with enough heritage and new build accommodation, spread over 65 acres of gardens and grounds, to house over 700 of its students.

What a stunning building. The room was beautiful, extremely comfy bed and pillows. It was spotless, plenty of tea, coffee and biscuits. The staff were very friendly and helpful. Added bonus of a Portrait Gallery in residence. Secure parking and stunning grounds. Great food at the social hub for breakfast. We also had a lovely meal in the Great Hall felt like we were at Hogwarts. We would definitely stay again great bus access into Cambridge.

The room was a delight. Beautiful and beautifully prepared with thoughtful touches like fresh milk in the fridge and an excellent coffee machine. There was even emergency toothpaste which was useful as I’d forgotten mine. The bed was extremely comfortable. It would have been better if breakfast has been included - and if we had realised where to go and at what time. We had a toastie from the cafe instead which was tasty.

Despite having spent my childhood in Girton, I'd hardly ever set foot in the grounds of Girton College. Living in Canada now, I set that straight by spending three delightful days free to wander around the College buildings and its surroundings. The room was quiet and comfortable with a kitchen and bathroom just down the corridor. The staff at the Porter's Lodge are helpful and the breakfasts are really good.

Excellent friendly reception and restaurant/cafeteria staff. Comfortable room. Easy to book. I'm not sure whether my rating of value for money is accurate because I don't know the accommodation market in the Cambridge area, but everything was comfortable and well-organised.

Before stayed in a student room, outside of term. This is a very nice hotel-like room. The shower is a small and a bit tricky to use but this is not a complaint. Especially liked the view of the back gardens, and the sports field. Will do again in the future.

GeorgeF

People are kind and polite, and the rooms are always clean, and the best part is that everything is nearby.

JESUSV

We were delighted with the room. It compares well with the best hotels we’ve stayed in.
