History

Founded in 1845 as Queen’s College Galway, the University of Galway opened in 1849 with 68 students and has since grown into one of Ireland’s leading universities. Its iconic Quadrangle Building, built in Tudor Gothic style from local limestone, stands proudly on the River Corrib.

Originally part of the Queen’s University of Ireland, it became University College Galway (UCG) in 1908, NUI Galway in 1997, and officially University of Galway in 2022, with the name gaining legal status in 2024.

Blending a rich heritage in the Irish language with a forward-looking focus on research and innovation, the University of Galway continues to shape education and discovery on Ireland’s west coast.

Driving & Parking

Guests staying at the University of Galway summer accommodation have access to a limited amount of free on-site parking, available on a first-come, first-served basis. Parking close to your apartment cannot be guaranteed.

Complimentary parking is available at Corrib Village and Dangan Park & Ride Car Park (adjacent to Dunlin Village) for all summer residents. Please note that blue-lined Pay & Display spaces require payment.

No parking permit is required; however, vehicles must be registered with the university’s parking management provider. Guests can register their vehicle at reception. Unregistered vehicles may be clamped.

A permit is required for parking in all other areas of the University of Galway campus, except for Pay & Display spaces. Clamping is strictly enforced outside Corrib Village, Dangan Park & Ride, and all Pay & Display areas.
