Overview

The Queen’s College Oxford is delighted to offer student en suite study bedrooms in both the Palladian-style buildings as well as in the refurbished modern annexe Carrodus Quad, both situated prominently on the historic High Street in the centre of Oxford.

All rooms have tea and coffee making facilities, refrigerators, bed linen, towels and complimentary toiletries, and are serviced daily by their friendly housekeeping staff, the Scouts. There are no lifts in the Main College and ground floor rooms are limited. The rooms in Carrodus Quad are however serviced by a lift.

Please state any access requirements or rooming preferences at the time of booking; please be aware however that it cannot be guaranteed whether accommodation is located in Main College or Carrodus Quad. It is only possible to facilitate room changes after arrival in the case of any room or equipment defects.

Regrettably, the College and its environment are not suitable for children, and therefore residents are required to be over 18 years. Stag & Hen parties are also not permitted.

Queen’s has featured in the film The Golden Compass (the renamed Northern Lights, part of Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials trilogy) and the popular TV programme Lewis.

History

The “Hall of the Queen’s Scholars at Oxford” was founded in 1341 by Robert de Eglesfield, a chaplain in the household of Queen Philippa, who named it in her honour. He envisaged an establishment of fellows, chaplains, ‘poor boys’ and various officials and servants, headed by a Provost. Membership was to be open, but with a preference for inhabitants of Cumberland and Westmorland. Parts of the current College date back to the 17th century and replace the earlier medieval College buildings that had fallen into disrepair in the 16th century. The College is one of the oldest constituent Colleges of the University of Oxford.

Many of the original statutes for the College are still followed today, including such traditional observances as the summoning of the Members of the College to dinner by a trumpet call. Throughout the year the College observes feasts of the Church, including the All Saints’ Gaudy on All Saints' Day, the famous Boar’s Head Gaudy just before Christmas and the Needle and Thread Gaudy shortly after New Year’s Day.

The room was on the small side but clean, warm, quiet and comfortable, with a modern en-suite bathroom. There was no TV but I had expected this so had loaded some programs on my iPad. There was a good quality breakfast with a big range of options. Queen’s College is very centrally located for the main sights of Oxford. Overall I would recommend staying.

A very enjoyable stay, thank you. The staff throughout the college were unfailingly helpful and friendly, and made our group feel very welcome. In the bedrooms an additional pillow would be welcome, along with a bottle of water, without which it is difficult to fill the kettle in the small sink.

Nice sized room with a lovely view. I couldn’t get the hot water to work in the shower but had nice quick showers as a result. I really enjoyed seeing the chapel and hall at Queen’s College.

It was great staying here. Staff is very friendly! Rooms are basic, but the atmosphere is fantastic. Full English Breakfast is very good. Central in the city centre.

Arrival information & directions

Address: The Queen's College, High Street, Oxford, Oxfordshire, OxfordOX1 4AW, United Kingdom

There is a luggage store should you arrive before your room is ready as well as for use on check-out.

Please can all guests vacate their rooms and return keys to the Lodge by 10.00am. Please be advised that check out after 10.00am is subject to a £50 charge and lost room keys are also subject to a £50 charge.

Please note that there is no parking available at the College itself but access by public transport is easy.

Arrivals: Guests should report to the Lodge at the main entrance to the college on the High Street. The Lodge staff are on duty in the Lodge 24 hours a day. The door to the college is locked after 8.00pm on Saturdays, or 9.00pm on all other days, but there is an intercom system with which to contact the duty lodge staff. After this time there is a chance that the duty staff may be on their rounds checking and locking everything for the night so if you are arriving late (after 8.00pm), please be patient as you may have to wait until they return to the Lodge to attract their attention. You can phone the Lodge and the number is provided on the website.

Access to the College is easy. The main railway station is about a mile away and the bus station is a similar distance. Buses from London, Heathrow, Gatwick, and most local buses stop immediately outside the Main College on the High Street.

Whilst the College does not have any parking spaces available, the Thornhill and Seacourt Park & Ride buses also stop immediately outside the College (ask the driver for the Queen's Lane stop). The nearest public pay & display car park is St Clements.
