Overview

You are assured a warm welcome at the Best Western Rose and Crown Hotel. Originally a 14th-century coaching inn, it has been lovingly restored to a modern-day hotel over the centuries.

The Rose and Crown combines the ambiance and character of yesteryear with all the modern needs of today's guests and is within walking distance of Colchester town center and accessible to all the historical sights of Colchester, which include Colchester Castle and Zoo.  It is less than an hour's drive from Stansted Airport and 40 minutes from Harwich Port. Central London is 45 minutes by train, and Cambridge's idyllic city is an hour's drive away.

The Hotel has 39 ensuite bedrooms located in various sections of the building. Choose from beamed character rooms in the original house, classically styled rooms in the central hotel, or executive rooms in the annex. Please make your request in the Additional Information section of the booking form.

All rooms have tea/coffee making facilities, large flat-screen televisions, a hairdryer, and free wifi.

History

Originally a 14th-century coaching inn, The Rose and Crown were used as a stop-over for those bringing prisoners from the continent and Suffolk en route to London. The hotel still has a prison of which two cells with original doors can be seen.

Many of the beams and windows are original. The fireplace in the Tudor bar, which is in the oldest part of the hotel, has a roaring log fire in the winter.

Food & beverage

Steeped in history, The Tudor Bar and Brasserie is in the oldest part of the building. Oak beamed walls and a glorious log fire at the center create a warm and friendly atmosphere.

It is perfect for dedicated dining and relaxed drinking, serving traditional favorites and international cuisine.
