History

Selwyn College takes its name from George Augustus Selwyn, who was the first Bishop of New Zealand from 1841 to 1868 and later Bishop of Lichfield, and in whose memory the College was founded. The College crest incorporates the Selwyn family arms and those of the Diocese of Lichfield. Selwyn was one of the first colleges to become mixed, admitting women in 1976.

Food & beverage

A full English and continental breakfast is available from the self-service cafeteria from 7.45am - 9.30am and is generally eaten in the Dining Hall.

The Cafeteria is open from 7.45am - 7pm and visitors are welcome to use the self-service facility on a pay-as-you-eat basis. The Cafeteria has a selection of drinks, hot food, snacks and sandwiches as well as non-food items such as toiletries, batteries and common medicines.

During vacation periods, the College bar is typically open from 6pm - 11pm, Monday to Saturday. However, occasional variations do apply, please check locally.

Whilst there are small kitchenettes (gyp rooms) on each floor, these are private student areas and not available to guests. Tea and coffee-making facilities are provided in each bedroom.

Grounds & Gardens

Visitors are welcome to use the College gardens but are requested not to walk on the grass in Old Court or Ann's Court, to enter the Fellows' and Master's garden or to play games, Frisbee etc in the gardens.

Other facilities

WiFi internet access is free of charge.

Laundry facilities are available on-site at an additional charge.

Please note the College operates a cashless payment system.

I was in Cripps court (I forget the room number) but it was L something or other and it was an ensuite. The room was beautiful, so convenient and the porters were also very friendly.

Arrival information & directions

Address: Grange Road, Cambridge, CambridgeCB3 9DQ, United Kingdom

On arrival, please go to the Porters' Lodge with your booking confirmation where you will be given the key and directions to your room. You may also be asked to provide your ID upon check-in.

Despite the term “Porters”, it is not part of a College Porter’s duties to handle luggage. You will need to carry your own luggage to your room.

Please vacate your room and return the keys to the Porters' Lodge on the day of departure by 9.30am to enable the rooms to be serviced for incoming guests.

Directions:

By Car: The easiest way to approach the College by road from the north, south or east is from Junction 12 of the M11. Take the A603 (Barton Road) towards Cambridge. Pass Wolfson College on the left. About 1.5 miles from the M11 you will reach the traffic lights of a pedestrian crossing. Turn left into Grange Road directly after this pedestrian crossing opposite the Hat and Feathers public house. Continue down Grange Road and go straight over the T junction with Sidgwick Avenue and Selwyn College is immediately on the right-hand side. Parking is not permitted in the Fellows' car park in front of the Porters' Lodge.

Unfortunately, Selwyn College does not offer on-site parking. Free car parking is available on some of the roads surrounding the College.

By Train: Taxis are available for hire from outside Cambridge railway station and the fare should cost under £10 from the station to the College. Regular buses run from the railway station to the city centre.

By Bus: Take a Citi 4 or Uni 4 bus from Emmanuel Street stop 4 destined for "Madingley" or "Cambourne" to reach West Road and Grange Road with stops close to the College.

By Air: You can travel to Cambridge by rail, coach or taxi. Stansted is the closest major airport about 40 minutes away.
