Overview

117 St Aldates Building is an annexe of Christ Church and is centrally located, just across and at the top of the road from the main site.

Guests are accommodated in newly refurbished, comfortable double ensuite bedrooms with a standard double bed (for single or double occupancy) (all guests must be over 18 no refund if the requirements are not met). A selection of rooms has street-facing windows (please note there may be noise disturbance) but many have restricted views over the backs of other buildings. The rooms are located over four floors and can be accessed by a lift.

Check-in at the Porters’ Lodge within Christ Church, located at the main entrance, off Tom Gate. For arrivals after 1930, Tom Gate will be closed so please use the bell on the left-hand side to alert the porter in order to gain access.

The lodge reception is staffed 24 hours a day and is the only information point for 117 St Aldates Building as there is no separate reception in the annexe.

The college is unable to accept bookings for Stag and Hen groups and can only accommodate adults (aged 18 and over), and does not permit babies/children sharing a room with adults. All occupants must be over 18. If such a booking is made, you will be asked to cancel it. The refund amount will be in line with T&Cs, or if you arrive at the property, you will be refused entry and no refund will be given. They also do not permit guests to bring in visitors to the College.

History

St Aldates Building is located on what is probably the oldest street in Oxford. From the eighth century, it would have carried traffic from the Midlands, across the river, towards the south. In the fourteenth century, shops stood on the site of number 117 and at some point in the next hundred years, the shops were rebuilt and the Red Lion Inn occupied the plot until about 1740.

Today's accommodation was built in 1938 as a rather glamorous Art Deco showroom, called Therm House, for the Oxford and District Gas Company.

Food & beverage

A cooked and continental breakfast is available in the unique setting of the Great Hall, Christ Church, with its stunning hammer-beam roof and wonderful oil paintings. Breakfast is self-select, but if you have any queries due to an allergy or intolerance, please speak to a member of staff.

Monday – Saturday: 0730 – 0900, Sunday: 0800 – 0930

Oxford has many places to dine either for lunch, dinner or food on the go – for local suggestions see the information provided in the ‘Guest Information’ booklet in your room.

I had a splendid stay. So convenient for the conference I was attending in the Examinations Halls, various colleges, and the BSG. The instructions warned about noise in the street (St. Aldates) but it did not keep me awake. I did need the window open to keep the room cool. Porter's Lodge service and help was brilliant. Breakfast superb in those lovely surroundings. A big thank you.

The bedroom was clean and very calm. You can visit the university whenever you want, just when it's closed to puclic, many others building are not accessible either. I enjoyed my stay. Having breakfast in this beautiful building is a great experience, especially for Harry Potter fans. The staff is very kind and gave me useful informations. I recommend this place !
