Overview

St Hugh’s College offers bed and breakfast accommodation amid listed buildings and beautiful gardens. Its North Oxford location is next door to the city’s trendiest quarter, Jericho, and only a fifteen-minute walk or a short bus ride from Oxford’s museums, shops, bars and restaurants, making the College the perfect oasis of calm for students to live and study, and a great springboard for visitors to explore the city.

St Hugh’s has a range of rooms available, from ensuite to basic. Visitors can opt for Edwardian heritage, with rooms in the Main Building, or alternatively, there are ensuite rooms in the award-winning and environmentally sensitive Maplethorpe and Rachel Trickett Buildings, as well as premium bed and breakfast suites in The Dickson Poon University of Oxford China Centre Building, opened by His Royal Highness Prince William in 2014.

Also available are discounted single rooms in the Kenyon, Wolfson and MGA buildings; these are usually student rooms and offer an excellent taste of College life.

The College accommodation gives guests an interesting and affordable alternative to modern hotels, at the heart of one of the world’s top universities. All rooms are furnished and appointed as a typical scholar’s study bedroom, with the extra provision for visitors of bed linen, towels, toiletries, and tea and coffee-making facilities.

History

Founded in 1886 by Elizabeth Wordsworth, the great niece of the poet William Wordsworth, using money left to her by her father, Christopher Wordsworth, who had been Bishop of Lincoln. She named the college after one of her father's 12th-century predecessors, Hugh of Avalon, who was canonised in 1220.

Tread in the footsteps of such alumni as Aung San Suu Kyi, Barbara Castle and former Prime Minister Theresa May, and share in the real Oxford scholar’s experience by staying at St Hugh’s.

Food & beverage

The price of a stay also includes the College's famously generous full English cooked breakfasts (or a lighter continental alternative if preferred), served in the traditional Dining Hall between 8.00 am - 9.30 am (term-time) and between 8.00 am - 10.00 am (vacation periods), where guests can sit and soak up the atmosphere.

There is also a beautiful landscaped picnic area on the college grounds.

Grounds & Gardens

The College has a tranquil fourteen acres of self-contained grounds, maintained to a very high standard by a team of full-time gardeners. There are ample lawns, borders, mature and specimen ornamental trees, all popular with the local birds and squirrels, making St Hugh’s one of the loveliest hidden delights of Oxford. There is even a croquet lawn in the summer. Plenty of outside seating is available in scenic spots, so guests can relax and enjoy the peace.

Other facilities

  • Wi-Fi access provided by Sky 'The Cloud'
  • Extensive landscaped gardens
  • Disabled access via elevator in some buildings
  • Linen and towels provided
  • Luggage storage
  • 24-hour security
  • Summer croquet lawn
  • Sports opportunities, such as a gym, golf course, tennis courts and a swimming pool are all a short drive away

Please mention in the "Additional information" section of the booking form if parking is required, as the College has a limited number of spaces.

Lovely gardens, friendly helpful staff. Excellent dinner (College special) and good breakfast. Easy access to bus route into central Oxford. Clean quiet room. Double bed not very big, and some might find the stairs to the door of the building a bit of a challenge, but the convenience of staying in a place with such great ambience was an overall winner. Recommended.

I really enjoyed my stay at St Hugh’s college. The staff were all very friendly, the facilities good and high quality breakfast - better than Premier Inn breakfast! The bed was very comfortable and I slept very well, the views were lovely and I even saw squirrels and a fox when I was walking through the gardens. I’ll definitely be staying again!

What a find! So much better than every other university room we’ve booked in oxford. Standards of cleanliness and service from staff were fantastic! Thank you for a lovely stay!

There was a slight mix-up with the booking as my friend and I had been put in different buildings but this was immediately sorteo.
