Overview

Dalhousie is an imposing 13th-century castle fortress just 8 miles from Edinburgh’s city centre. Set within acres of wooded parkland on the picturesque banks of the River Esk, Dalhousie Castle has luxurious surrounds, and holds the title as ‘Scotland’s Oldest Inhabited Castle’.

The hotel has 35 bedrooms within the estate with 29 bedrooms in the castle which have been individually designed and decorated in Scottish fabrics such as tweed, tartan and twill. Period furniture, rugs and carpets combine to create a richly warm and luxurious feel. There is an additional 6 bedrooms located within a newly renovated building within the castle grounds called "Castle Rocks".

There are many sporting pursuits locally to the castle such as; archery, falconry, fishing, horse riding and golf. Edinburgh City has many attractions such as Holyrood Palace, Edinburgh Castle, Princes Street and the Royal Mile which is accessible in under 30 minutes.

History

The Ramsays of Dalhousie has reason to be proud of their heritage and their long links with Scottish history. They held possession of Dalhousie longer than any other family has retained possession of a castle in Scotland. The Castle, which is situated in the parish of Cockpen, eight miles south of Edinburgh, dates from the 13th century, although only the enormously thick walls at the foundation level and the vaults remain, of the original building. The main parts of the present structure were built about 1450 from red stone quarried from the opposite bank of the South Esk River on which the Castle stands. In the succeeding centuries, there have been various additions and modifications, but the essential form of the Castle which had an L-shaped keep surrounded by an outer curtain wall can still be clearly discerned.

Food & beverage

Full Scottish breakfast is included in your stay and is made freshly to order.

Guests may enjoy a completely unique dining experience in the ancient barrel-vaulted dungeons. The restaurant has been awarded 2 AA Rosettes, with a varied menu which incorporates Scottish dishes cooked and prepared in a classic French cooking style, whilst using locally sourced produce.

Grounds & Gardens

The castle has large grounds for guests to explore.

Other facilities

All bedrooms are equipped with soft Egyptian cotton bed linen, fluffy towels, robes, slippers and Molton Brown toiletries, 32″ HD TV with Freeview, an in-room telephone, ensuite bathroom,  iron and ironing board, hairdryers, and a welcoming hospitality tray. Wi-Fi is available in Castle Rocks.

Guests have complimentary access to the hotel's Spa which combines relaxing and therapeutic treatments designed to invigorate and rejuvenate your body and mind.

My stay at Dalhousie was short but memorable for comfort and the most delicious meal of my entire 20 day trip.
