History

Alan Doble Sanderson bought what is now De Vere Selsdon Estate in 1924 and transformed the mansion into a luxury country house hotel; however, the estate predates this by hundreds of years.  Traced back to as early as 861AD, an Anglo-Saxon hall, a medieval estate of the Knights Templar and a Victorian country seat are just some of its former lives.

In the 1930s, architect Hugh Mackintosh worked in stages to enlarge the hotel adding in mansion east and west wing and creating the statement house that stands today with its neo-Jacobean style and red-bricked façade.
Surrounded by 200 acres of grounds, the hotel offers superb space with its large outdoor areasSelsdon: and sculptured high-ceiling rooms for a range of events.

Food & beverage

At the new 1042 Restaurant & Bar, traditional classic dishes are served with an added modern twist.

Choose from ale battered fish & chips, chicken caesar salad and a local artisan cheese board. On the grill the steaks are sourced from Scottish Buccleuch farmers, who hang the beef on the bone to give a full and distinctive flavour.

Inspired by the estate's rich history but with a 21st-century twist, here dining comes with great views through the bay windows, set in the original stone surrounds, out to the gardens.

* Please pre-book these - for dinner, you only need to pre-book if you are not staying with us.

Grounds & Gardens

Golf and gym and swimming pool in Surrey.

In 1929, five-time British Open champion, JH Taylor was asked to design a golf course. Today this is the Selsdon Estate Golf Club, a leading Croydon golf club.

Cut from the thick forest that dominated the hotel’s 200 acres at the time, this challenging 18-hole par 73 golf course takes around four-and-a-half hours to complete if walking. In addition to the nine par 4 holes, there are five par 5 holes, four of which measure over 500 yards and look out for the 17th hole - a memorable par 3 from an elevated tee across a valley.

There is also a range of corporate golf days, golf break packages, and membership options to enjoy from one-night with a round of golf, to a three-night stay with unlimited golf. All packages come with evening dinners and buffet breakfasts.

A very popular local golf club, we strongly recommend any guests that wish to play, book in advance.

Gym and swimming pool in Surrey:

The gym, swimming pool, sauna, steam room and Jacuzzi have now completed their refurbishment and are back open every day for use by hotel guests as well as members.

The gym is equipped with a range of cardiovascular and resistance training equipment and is suited to most levels of fitness.  Tennis courts and squash courts are available for guests and members. There is also a separate shallow section of the pool suitable for toddlers.

There is a range of classes for all abilities including Tai Chi, Pilates, aqua aerobics, circuit training, and body conditioning.

Membership starts from as little as £45 per month.

Other facilities

Guests can enjoy garden views while dining at the 1042 Restaurant & Bar, a swim in the indoor swimming pool or a work out in the gym. Squash and tennis courts are also available. Residential rates are provided to guests for the on-site golf course. The hotel offers rooms with high ceilings and outdoor areas for meetings and events.
