History

Fitzwilliam was founded in 1869 specifically to broaden access to Cambridge University. The College moved to its current site in 1963 and received its royal charter in 1966. At the heart of its beautiful grounds is a fine Regency house once occupied by Emma Darwin, and the campus boasts award-winning buildings by key 20th and 21st-century architects.

Food & beverage

A self-service breakfast, either full English or continental is available in the Hall between 08.00am and 09.00am each day.

The Coffee shop in Fitzwilliam is open Monday - Friday between 09.00am - 14.00pm and serves delicious cakes and sandwiches. It also has free Wi-Fi.

There are numerous pubs and restaurants within a 5-10 minute walk of the College.

Grounds & Gardens

The Fitzwilliam College Gardens offer a display of modern and traditional planting, tended by the five-strong gardening team. Discover the metaphorical water of the Sunken Garden, the primeval Ginko Biloba, and the gigantic, ancient plane tree — one of many fine mature trees on the site.

The College grounds were once Emma Darwin’s garden and beautiful old trees provide a haven for birds and wildlife. She wrote in 1883, “I never saw such a display of primroses anywhere, especially under each of the beech trees; they were like a carpet.” These two beech trees are still standing, and the 100-year-old lime tree avenue still creates a wonderful vista from Storey's Way to The Grove.

Other facilities

Free parking is available onsite (subject to availability) with spaces for blue badge holders in the Storey's Way car park.  Car parks are available in both Storey’s Way & Huntingdon Road, as well as free on-street parking which is close by. A token-operated laundry is available: tokens can be purchased from the Porters’ Lodge and Coffee shop.

Adaptors are available for sale at the Porters' Lodge for £2.50.

Very comfortable bed and temperature good. Good pillows and duvet. Plenty of space. Minor points that bedside cabinet was at end of bed so no light to get up in night. Used chair at bedside instead and torch on mobile phone. Not sure whether paper bath mat was intended to be used in shower or outside but it did get very wet from shower when used at basin so not much use! I would book again as it was a lovely room overlooking grassy area and big old tree.

Not bad at all. We stayed for two nights to allow us sufficient time for a decent visit to the Fitzwilliam museum and the city center in general. Friendly staff. The accommodation is adequate with two single beds, a kettle, tea and coffee in the room. The shower/toilet is pretty small. The kitchens had a microwave, toaster, oven and a larger kettle but nothing else in the way of utensils, plates etc, so be warned if you plan to cook anything. .

Stay was pleasant. Room is as per a student dormitory, acceptable and very good for the price. Toilet probably was a let down, some how always damp. But otherwise no complaints. Comes with breakfast at the halls which is your typical British breakfast. The stay is opportunistic, only available between terms.

Everything was perfect. Room was clean and well equipped. Gardens beautiful. Breakfast had plenty of choice. Staff lovely too. Would definitely stay again. Thank you for having us.

Issue with tap on arrival. Quickly dealt with by moving to another room. All staff extremely courteous and food and drink very good value for money. Beautiful gardens.

Anon

Comfy room, decent breakfast and, as an extra bonus, allowed to leave the car parked at the college for the day after checking out in the morning.

HelenS

The building and room was really lovely and comfortable, the breakfast was very good too. Lots to choose from.

PamB

Everything fine. A little way out of central Cambridge . S lot of international school children in College.

Anon

The room was a little too warm for me at night; otherwise I very much enjoyed my stay
