Overview

The Fortingall is a handsome 19th Century ‘Arts and Crafts’ style hotel in Highland Perthshire, which was refurbished in early 2025 to now offer the best in comtemporary luxury whilst retaining its Victorian charm.  It has a high quality restaurant and charming pub, The Ewe.

On it's doorstep, The Fortingall has access to many walking, hiking and biking routes, it's own 2 miles of salmon and trout fishing, Land Rover Tours, swimming, and clay pigeon shooting. Customers can enjoy picnics next to the river prepared by the hotel kitchen.

The historic village of Fortingall sits at the entrance to Glen Lyon and just a short distance from Loch Tay – both gems at the heart of Highland Perthshire.  Glen Lyon has been described as "Scotland's most beautiful glen" (Trout & Salmon) and "The longest, loneliest, and loveliest glen in Scotland" (Sir Walter Scott).

History

With its 19th Century ‘Arts and Crafts’ style architecture, the hotel owes much of its appeal to the work of the highly regarded Victorian architect, James MacLaren, who was commissioned to rebuild an old village inn by Sir Donald Currie, shortly after his purchase of Glenlyon Estate.  The Fortingall Hotel is understood to have been completed in 1891 and has been continually functioning as a hotel to this day.

Food & beverage

The restaurant is renowned for its high quality local produce including venison, beef and lamb, and vegetables from the garden.  The menu changes each month.

The Ewe pub offers a warm atmosphere and traditional pub menu and is well stocked with beers and spirits.

The cocktail bar has an extensive cocktail menu and a good selection of single malt whiskies.

A traditional afternoon tea is served in the Drawing Room, along with tea and coffee throughout the day.

Grounds & Gardens

There are many things to do in the area, including seeing famous Fortingall yew tree which is on the doorstep, visit Cluny gardens, walk along the many paths or among the hills in the area, fish for salmon or trout*, hire e-bikes*, take a Land Rover tour*, or take a brave swim in the river or loch!  *these starred activities should all be booked in advance through The Fortingall website, or do enquire for more information.

The hotel's well-kept gardens provide a chance to absorb the sounds and array of colours from the garden and surrounding fields and forests

The recent renovations have made The Fortingall a very special place to stay, with a relaxing atmosphere and every need catered for. The bedroom was beautiful and extremely comfortable, with a gorgeous shower room, plus an amazing bath looking out over the fields to the hills. The restaurant and sitting room were stunning, with attentive staff and very good food and wines. There's masses to do in the area for country sports enthusiasts, walkers, cyclists, history buffs, artists and more.
