Overview

In the heart of the City, Durham Castle forms part of Durham's UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Grade 1 listed building shares Palace Green with Durham's iconic Norman Cathedral and is a few hundred yards from all the facilities and amenities that the City has to offer.

Due to the historic nature of the building, rooms are not wheelchair accessible.  Some rooms are in the Castle Keep have over 100 steps to reach them and within Owengate (outside the Castle walls) have up to 65 steps.  There are limited ground floor rooms and there are no lifts.

The historic Castle is Durham University's first and oldest College and used for student accommodation in University term times, but is available as guest accommodation during University vacations; January, Easter and throughout July, August and September.

Staying at Durham Castle is an unparalleled experience and, whilst unlike a hotel there are not some modern conveniences like TVs in your room or lifts in the buildings, it is part of a wonderful World Heritage Site.  All rooms are subject to availability at the time of booking.  En-suite rooms have showers, but no baths.

Restoration work is taking place over summer 2025 in the Junction, Keep and Fellows Garden. This work will generate some noise, between 9am and 3pm on weekdays. However, evenings will not be effected.

Scaffolding has been erected at one side of the Barbican, to facilitate the work in Fellows Garden, but the access to the Castle remains fully open.

On occasion, breakfast will be served in the Undercroft, rather than the Great Hall, due the ongoing restoration work.

ACCESS STATEMENT

The Castle is an historic building with difficult stairs and passageways with access limited to upper floors. There are large numerous steps throughout the Castle with cobbles laid in some of the surfaces and pathways. There are low doorways throughout many with stepped up/down access.

The Castle is located on the Peninsula of Durham City. The following statement is a realistic assessment of the accessibility for guests and visitors. It would be fair at this point to state that the Castle has very limited provision for visitors with mobility issues due to the age and original design of the building. However, the Castle is committed to improving access and facilities for visitors with disabilities.

The pavements are a mix of flagstone and brick with standard kerbs. The route is relatively flat, with usual slip and trip hazards.

There is no car parking at the Castle. The front of the Castle and path are well illuminated during hours of darkness.   You can find details on parking in the city on the following: https://www.durham.gov.uk/article/3486/Durham-City-car-parks - the nearest car park is Prince Bishop multi-storey.

Due to the unusual layout of the various stone staircases, multiple stairs can be found both externally and internally.   The stone stairs have worn treads and uneven surfaces.  Timber staircases are narrow and are slightly awkward and care is needed!  There are no lifts in the Castle.

There is not an easily accessible public or staff WC. There are no additional handles or accessories for persons with mobility issues.

All the bedrooms are situated on floors above the ground floor level. Access to all bedrooms is via staircases.  The staircases are old fashioned in keeping with the style of the building. They are curved in places and not all treads are similar. Handrails are in place however extra care should be given to guests with visual impairments, or other mobility problems.

There is a large garden at the rear of the building. This is accessed via brick steps from the Courtyard. Unfortunately, there is no easy access for persons with restricted mobility.

History

The present Castle began in 1072 as a simple defensive mound commissioned by William the Conqueror to defend the peninsula formed by the meander in the River Wear. Over the centuries, the Castle has been a residence of the Bishops of Durham who added to the buildings and altered them to suit the needs of the time.

The University of Durham was founded in 1832 by Bishop Van Mildert and the Dean and Chapter of the Cathedral. After Van Mildert's death in 1836, the Castle was handed over to the University and became University College in 1837, the oldest of the Durham Colleges. Early generations of students lived either in University House, now Cosin's Hall, or in the Castle Keep which was reconstructed in 1840.

The College is an academic community within Durham University of around 600 undergraduates and 50 postgraduates, and members of University staff attached to the College through the Senior Common Room. All members, both academic staff and students, share a common aim: the pursuit of knowledge. There are many other aspects of College life: cultural, sporting and social, but the main purpose of the College is academic.

Food & beverage

The rates include breakfast served between Monday to Friday 0800 to 1000 / Saturday and Sunday 0800 to 1000, usually served in the medieval Great Hall.  The Castle does not offer any food above breakfast but there are plenty of places nearby with these facilities.

The College Undercroft Bar is open when events are taking place, although there may be event guests in the Bar the area is not private to events and B&B guests are welcome to enter. Check at the Reception for opening times.  There are numerous bars and restaurants within a few minutes' walk from the Castle.

Grounds & Gardens

The Castle, part of Durham's World Heritage Castle, is located on Palace Green across from the City's iconic Norman Cathedral. Either relax walking around the historic city or take a stroll along the nearby banks of the River Wear.

Due to the nature of Durham Castle, it is used as a venue for a variety of events and functions. As such, there may be some noise and minor disruption during your stay.

Durham Cathedral is located next to Durham Castle and, as a result, guests should be aware the Cathedral bells ring prior to services on a Sunday and between 1830 and 2030 each Thursday evening.

Other facilities

Rooms include tea and coffee making facilities.

Wifi is available in all bedrooms and to connect guests must use ‘thecloud@durham’.

Guide and assistance dogs are welcome to stay, maximum one dog per room. However, the venue holds a policy that no other dogs can stay overnight.

Had a wonderful stay in Durham and what an experience staying in the castle. Would definitely recommend. We had a very spacious room with en-suite bathroom. The accommodation had so much character and it was lovely to explore without any crowds. So close to everything Durham had to offer. The breakfast was an unlimited cooked English breakfast - continental was also available. Fantastic value for money.

Most amazing student halls I have ever stayed in! Obviously not for everyone: it is student accommodation – more like a hostel than a hotel. And there were about a million stairs up to my room, as it was at the top of a tower (and they didn't have lifts in medieval castles!). But if you are ok with that (which I was) – you get bed and (a very good) breakfast in a castle, next to the cathedral.

Lovely setting especially for the breakfast. Room was basic but complete with a modern bathroom. Beds were bit softer than we would have preferred but okay for one night. Great view and atmosphere. Make sure you are in good shape though as there are LOTS of steps to get to the room - which is expected since its in the castle!

We love DC staying at the castle ahead of the Great North run. Made the weekend all the more enjoyable. The rooms are basic but perfectly fine and the experience, and the breakfast was wonderful! Would defo stay again

I was a student at Durham and have stayed at the castle before. It is amazing and old ! It is in need of ongoing tlc and restoration like all old buildings but it was a great experience to stay there again.

MoW

Very pleasant, historical and evocative surroundings. An enjoyable welcome from the porter and, in the morning, a very full breakfast well served.

MartinH

Really enjoyed the experience of staying in a castle. Fitness levels were tested when climbing all the stairs!
