History

Grenfell Campus first opened its doors in 1975 as the Western Coast Regional College of Memorial University of Newfoundland. It wasn’t until 1979 that the college adopted its official name, honoring one of Newfoundland and Labrador’s most influential people. It is no surprise that the leaders of the college wished to name the institution after a man who was pivotal in the development of educational, social and medical infrastructure in northern and western Newfoundland.

Sir Wilfred Grenfell came from England in 1892 to investigate the lives of the people who fished "on the Labrador". He found poverty and destitution and decided to change it. Through his tireless efforts – fund-raising, building hospitals, nursing stations, schools, and more – Dr. Grenfell enriched the lives of thousands of people.

In St. Anthony, a museum has been established in his original house, containing photographs and memorabilia of his life, and a statue in his honor stands in the town’s Grenfell Park. The hospital he constructed in 1924 still stands, and the International Grenfell Association, based in St. Anthony, continues his work.

Food & beverage

The Residence Complex nightly rate includes a continental breakfast. Other types of accommodation do not include breakfast in the rate but it can be purchased for $8.95 + HST per person.

Are you a sports team or school group staying on campus? How about a pizza party or a BBQ after the winning game? Or a healthy breakfast before you start your big day? Grenfell Campus catering services can design a menu that fits both your schedule and your budget.

Grounds & Gardens

Grenfell Campus is nestled in western Newfoundland’s scenic Humber Valley. It is located on the top of a hill in a very beautiful environment with lots of trees and natural beauty. If you are lucky you may even see a moose coming out of the woods to greet you!

There is access to the Corner Brook Stream Trail System right on Campus. The trail, which covers more than 5 km, winds through the city, following the meandering Corner Brook Stream. It is groomed and has rest areas throughout the three diverse sections of the trail. The upstream section takes walkers through an exciting natural Gorge Area offering spectacular views. The sunset in this area is amazing!

There is a beautiful playground about one kilometer away from Campus accessible by the trail.
