Overview

King's College is situated in the heart of Cambridge and offers views of the historic city, River Cam, the famous 'Backs' and beyond. The College is renowned for its academic success, iconic Chapel and world-famous choir. 

King's College is delighted to invite guests to stay in off-campus accommodation where some of the brightest young people live during their studies here in the College.

Bedrooms are booked with breakfast or brunch available in the dramatic gothic dining Hall. Off-road off-site parking is also available over certain dates in the summer.

Bene't Street Hostel

Accommodation is located off campus

Once the home of Barclay’s Bank, Bene’t Street provides a blend of modern facilities with high ceilings and sash windows. The single and double ensuite rooms have views of the Chapel and the old town centre and are located within minutes of the College. A lift provides access to two floors including disabled facilities.


History

The King's College of - Lady and St. Nicholas in Cambridge was founded in 1441 by King Henry VI and munificently endowed. King Henry VI laid the foundation stone for the Chapel in 1446, and it was completed in its entirety in 1544, thus taking some 100 years to build.

Famous alumni include David Baddiel (comedian, novelist & television presenter), Lily Cole (actor and entrepreneur), and Rupert Brooke (poet).

Food & beverage

The Hall

The beautiful Hall is the location for both breakfast and brunch, with ceilings stretching up to 41 feet in height.

Breakfast is served on a weekday from 8.00am to 9.15am

Brunch is served on a weekend & on bank holidays from 10.30am to 1.30pm

Coffee Shop

Freshly prepared snacks are available to purchase in the King's College coffee shop. There are a selection of specialist coffees, teas, healthy smoothies, warm pastries and a variety of snacks on offer.

Bar

Guests are also invited to the College Bar to enjoy an evening drink in a student setting (opening times vary).

Both venues are wrapped around the Chetwynd Court for those who wish to enjoy their refreshments outside.  

The friendly catering team are at hand to advise on allergen information.  Please ask a member of staff if you have any questions during your stay.  

Lunch or dinner is unable to be provided, however, there are various restaurants, cafés and pubs located close by. Bene’t Street, opposite the College, offers a variety of dining options, including the Eagle pub.

Grounds & Gardens

King's College boasts beautiful surrounds and guests are welcome to enjoy a stroll around the paths of the Back Lawn and down to the river whilst taking in the architectural splendour and punts passing by. The resident cows maintain the Backs during the summer months.  A stone of white Beijing marble can be viewed at the Backs of King's College, near the bridge over the River Cam, which commemorates the poet Xu Zhimo. The College grounds offer a serene and peaceful environment for all of the guests.

Other facilities

The Chapel
Guests are very welcome to visit the magnificent Chapel during their stay and during term time attend Evensong which takes place at 5:30pm.  While there is a charge for visitors to the Chapel and College grounds, entry is included in the price for guests who enjoy an overnight stay in the College. Room facilities
All guest rooms and public areas in the College include complimentary Wi-Fi, details of which will be handed to you on arrival at the Porter’s Lodge. Guest rooms also include tea and coffee making facilities.

Venue Hire

King’s can host many different styles of event, including intimate dinners in their charming Saltmarsh rooms, conferences in their Keynes lecture theatre, personal celebrations or corporate dinners in their magnificent Hall, even residential events for 150.

Check in information: Guests are invited to check-in and out at the Porters' Lodge, situated at the entrance to the College on King's Parade. Please show your booking confirmation to the Porter, who will provide you with your room keys, a map of the College and will direct you to your room. The Lodge is manned 24 hours; however, despite their title, the College Porters do not carry guest's bags but are there for advice and support.  The Porters are able to call a taxi for you if required. The property regrets that the College is not able to store luggage, but left luggage facilities are available nearby.

The Bene’t Street accommodation is a two-minute walk from the Porter’s Lodge. Bene’t Street accommodation is the old Barclay’s Bank building between ‘The Pint Shop’ bar and ‘Zizzi’s’ restaurant.

Directions:

By Car:  There are local car parks and park & ride sites located on the borders of Cambridge. The closest car park is the Grand Arcade which is a 5 minute walk through the historic Market Square but Park Street might also suit you as it is a short stroll along the fronts of some of the most famous Colleges - St John's and Trinity but to name a few. Please see the City Council website for details of pay and display car parks https://www.cambridge.gov.uk/parking.

By Train: The railway station is approximately a 25-minute walk or 10-minute taxi ride from the College.  Bus and taxi services are available outside the station entrance and are able to drop off outside the College entrance.

By Coach: Cambridge's main bus station, Drummer Street is approximately 10 minutes’ walk from the College. Please see https://www.cambridgeshire.gov.uk/info/20017/buses for timetables.

Off road parking: Located a 5-10 minute walk from the College, access to the car park will be from 9am on the day of arrival.
